Puligny-Montrachet produces some of Burgundy’s most buttery, beautiful Chardonnays. La Garenne, to the north of the village, is one of the appellations’ most interesting climats, with southeast-facing slopes and limestone-rich soils.
A handful of producers bottle this 1er cru, but Louis Latour’s 2017 La Garenne is our pick, every bit as splendid as you’d expect from one of the most hallowed names on the Côte de Beaune. It’s a real “coup de coeur”, as the French say: the kind of wine you’ll fall in love with, golden in colour and deliciously intense. Pairing-wise, it screams seafood: think scallops and sole meunière.
